View down Abercynon flight from junction with Glamorganshire Canal
View from Lock 17 of the Glamorganshire Canal, at right, towards the start of the Aberdare Canal route at left. The canal was 6.75 miles long with its head at Cwmbach.
Repair work proceeds on the culvert leading to the junction and Lock 17. Near here a stop lock was constructed to prevent water from passing between the two canals.
Looking back towards the junction and Lock 17.
The canal may be obscured by the vegetation; with the track forming part of the tow path.
The track extends about 200 yds from the junction.
The canal drops only 13ft in its 6 3/4 miles.
Only 2 locks were required; at Cwmbach and at Dyffryn near Mountain Ash
The canal opened in 1812 and closed in 1900 due to increase in railway use and subsidence from coal mines.
